PROJECT GUIDE

Estimate drywall sheets for a room

The Drywall Calculator estimates the board quantity for four room walls and, if selected, the ceiling. It subtracts the door and window areas you enter, adds a waste allowance, and divides the remaining coverage by the sheet size before rounding up to whole sheets.

Formula-based estimate US + Metric · Editable assumptions See DIYGauge methodology →
Best for

Simple rectangular rooms with standard wall height and known door/window openings.

Main output

Whole drywall sheets, estimated surface area, approximate screw count and sheet cost.

Key assumption

The estimate is area-based and does not optimize individual sheet layout or seam placement.

STEP BY STEP

How to use the Drywall Calculator

  1. Enter room length, width and height.
  2. Enter the number of doors and windows and their average areas so openings can be deducted.
  3. Choose whether the ceiling is included in the drywall project.
  4. Enter the sheet length and width you plan to purchase.
  5. Set waste and sheet price to produce a practical purchase quantity and material-cost estimate.

CALCULATION METHOD

Formula used by DIYGauge

Gross wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
Net wall area = Gross wall area − Door area − Window area
Total surface = Net wall area + Ceiling area when selected
Sheets = Total surface × (1 + Waste %) ÷ Sheet area, rounded up
USE THE RESULT

What this result helps you decide

Use the sheet count for the room shell; soffits, closets, multiple layers and specialty assemblies should be added separately.

RESULT EXPLAINED

The four walls total 384 sq ft. After subtracting 51 sq ft of openings, wall area is 333 sq ft. Adding the 144 sq ft ceiling gives 477 sq ft. With 10% waste and 32 sq ft sheets, the estimate rounds to 17 sheets.

PROJECT NOTES

Practical planning tips

✓

Sheet orientation, seams, staggered joints and room geometry can change the most efficient sheet count even when the total area is the same.

✓

Use the actual sheet size available for the project; larger sheets can reduce seams but may be harder to handle.

✓

Moisture-resistant, fire-rated and other board types should be selected according to the room and project requirements.

!
CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

Common mistakes to avoid

Fire-rated or sound assemblies may require more than one drywall layer.

Sheet orientation can change cuts and waste even when total surface area is unchanged.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Drywall Calculator FAQs

Does this calculator optimize drywall sheet layout?+

No. It is an area-based material estimate. Complex rooms and seam planning can require additional sheets or a detailed layout.

Are screws included?+

The result shows an approximate screw count based on the sheet quantity, but fastening requirements vary by framing, board type and installation specification.

Can I exclude the ceiling?+

Yes. Turn off the ceiling option when only the walls are being covered.

What if every opening has a different size?+

The calculator uses average door and window areas. For higher precision, combine opening areas manually or divide the room into more detailed sections.
