Estimate flooring packs from room size and coverage
The Flooring Calculator is designed for packaged floor coverings sold by coverage area. It calculates the room area, adds the waste percentage you choose, divides by the coverage in one pack, and rounds up to a whole number of packs.
Packaged laminate, vinyl, engineered flooring and similar products sold by square-foot or square-metre coverage.
Whole packs to purchase, purchase coverage and estimated pack cost.
Pack coverage should come from the exact flooring product you plan to buy.
How to use the Flooring Calculator
- Measure the floor length and width at the widest usable dimensions for the area you are covering.
- Enter a waste allowance for cuts, damaged pieces and layout losses.
- Enter the coverage printed on one flooring pack or carton.
- Add the price per pack to estimate the flooring-material cost.
- For irregular rooms, split the space into rectangles, calculate each section, and combine the areas before planning your purchase.
Formula used by DIYGauge
What this result helps you decide
Use the pack count and purchase coverage to compare flooring products with different carton sizes.
Worked example: 12 ft × 12 ft room
- Room
- 12 ft × 12 ft
- Waste
- 10%
- Coverage per pack
- 20 sq ft
- Price
- $42/pack
The measured area is 144 sq ft. With 10% waste, the purchase target is 158.4 sq ft. Dividing by 20 sq ft per pack gives 7.92, so 8 packs are required. At $42 each, the estimated flooring cost is $336.
Practical planning tips
Check the pack label rather than assuming every carton of the same flooring type covers the same area.
Rooms with angled walls, closets, islands or many doorways can create more offcuts than a simple rectangle.
Before ordering, confirm whether the installation system requires material to acclimate or whether spare planks should be kept for repairs.
Common mistakes to avoid
Transitions, closets and connected rooms can change the true installation area.
Do not round area down just because the final partial pack seems small.
Flooring Calculator FAQs
Does the calculator include underlayment?+
The general Flooring Calculator estimates flooring packs only. Use the Laminate Flooring Calculator when you want a separate underlayment estimate.
Should I subtract kitchen cabinets or fixed fixtures?+
Only subtract areas that definitely will not receive flooring. For bathrooms, the Bathroom Flooring Calculator includes a fixture-deduction field.
Why is the final number of packs rounded up?+
Flooring is sold in complete packs. A fractional pack is not a practical purchase quantity.
Can I use metric units?+
Yes. DIYGauge switches the dimensions and coverage fields between US and Metric measurement systems.
How Much Flooring Do I Need?
Turn room dimensions into purchase area and flooring packs without confusing measured area with boxed coverage.
