✓Measure the bed area instead of estimating from perimeter alone.
✓Choose depth before ordering—doubling depth doubles volume.
✓Use bag volume or supplier bulk units to convert the calculated volume into a shopping quantity.
Cubic feet = bed area × depth in feetCubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27Bulk purchase volume = cubic yards × (1 + waste allowance) 1. Measure garden beds as simple shapes
Rectangular beds use length × width. Split irregular beds into rectangles, circles or other simple sections and add their areas.
If you already know the bed area from a site plan or mapping tool, you can use that area directly in an area-based calculation.
2. Choose the mulch depth intentionally
A thin top-up layer and a new bed installation can require very different volumes. Because volume increases directly with depth, a small change across a large bed can add a substantial amount of material.
Do not count the depth of existing mulch unless you are planning to remove or supplement it in a specific way.
3. Convert volume into bulk or bagged material
Bulk mulch is often handled in cubic yards, while bagged mulch is labelled by cubic volume. Use the package volume printed on the bag to calculate bag count.
Avoid converting by weight unless the supplier specifically sells the product by weight because mulch density varies widely with material and moisture.
4. Measure before delivery day
Bulk deliveries can occupy more space than expected. Confirm the ordered volume, drop location and access before delivery.
The calculator gives material quantity only; it does not determine landscape fabric, edging or plant-specific mulching practices.
Example: 12 ft × 12 ft bed at 3 in deep
- Bed area
- 144 sq ft
- Depth
- 3 in
- Waste allowance
- 5%
The base volume is about 1.33 cubic yards. With a 5% planning allowance, the estimate is about 1.40 cubic yards.
Run your own numbers in the Mulch Calculator →What to avoid
- Measuring perimeter instead of area
- Forgetting to convert inches to feet
- Ordering by weight when the product is sold by volume
- Applying a generic depth without considering the existing bed
Before you order
- Measure bed area
- Choose target depth
- Convert depth units
- Calculate cubic volume
- Check bag or bulk unit size
- Plan delivery location
