PROJECT GUIDE

Gutter quantity begins at the eave, not at roof square footage

Gutters are linear materials. Measure the roof edges where gutter will actually be installed, then convert the total run into the stock section lengths sold for the selected system. A straight 40-foot eave and four 10-foot pieces may look like an exact match, but corners, expansion details, joint locations and system limitations can affect whether cut pieces are reusable. The calculator handles the linear takeoff. Outlet locations, downspout capacity, hangers, corners, end caps and drainage design remain separate parts of the gutter system.

Measurement

Follow the actual guttered eave/run, not the roof perimeter automatically.

Stock sections

Convert total run to the section length sold by the supplier.

Fittings separate

Corners, outlets, end caps, hangers and downspouts are not created by linear-foot math.

STEP BY STEP

How to use the Gutter Calculator

  1. Measure each gutter run along the eave and record straight sections between corners or end points.
  2. Add the linear runs that use the same gutter profile and stock length.
  3. Apply a modest cut allowance only if the layout is likely to create unusable short offcuts.
  4. Divide the adjusted run by stock section length and round up, then count fittings from the actual sketch.
02
CALCULATION METHOD

Linear footage does not know where joints occur

Adjusted gutter run = Measured linear run × (1 + Cut allowance)
Stock sections = Adjusted run ÷ Stock section length, rounded up

The calculation gives enough total stock length, but a piece can be too short for a particular run even when the combined footage looks sufficient. Keep individual run lengths on the sketch.

USE THE RESULT

Turn the run into a system takeoff

Use the section count alongside corner, outlet, end-cap and hanger quantities, then coordinate with the Downspout Calculator for outlet spacing planning.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Worked example: two straight eaves

Eave A
32 ft
Eave B
28 ft
Total run
60 ft
Stock length
10 ft
RESULT EXPLAINED

Pure linear footage suggests six 10-foot sections. If joints/corners require extra cut length or the system limits where seams can occur, one additional section may be practical; that is a layout decision rather than part of the 60-foot geometry.

Practical planning tips

✓

List each run length separately even when the calculator uses the combined footage; this makes stock-length planning much easier.

✓

Count inside and outside corners from the roof plan rather than estimating them from total linear feet.

✓

Place outlets and downspouts before cutting gutter so seam locations do not conflict with fittings.

✓

If the system is seamless and fabricated on site, use total run lengths rather than forcing the estimate into retail stock sections.

CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

Common mistakes to avoid

Measuring the entire roof perimeter when only some eaves receive gutter.

Assuming total stock footage guarantees every individual run can be cut without shortage.

Forgetting end caps and corners because they do not add much linear length.

Using gutter length alone to decide downspout capacity or drainage performance.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Gutter Calculator FAQs

Do I measure roof area for gutters?+

No. Gutters are primarily measured by the linear length of the eaves/runs where they will be installed.

How do I calculate stock sections?+

Divide the adjusted total run by the section length sold and round up, while checking whether individual run lengths create additional cut needs.

Does this include corners and end caps?+

No. Count fittings from the actual gutter layout.

What if my gutters are seamless?+

Use the measured run lengths as the takeoff and discuss fabrication limits with the installer/supplier rather than converting to retail stock sections.
