Convert roof footprint and pitch into roofing quantity
The Roofing Calculator starts with the horizontal roof footprint, adjusts it with a pitch factor, adds waste, and then converts the purchase area into roofing squares and approximate shingle bundles in US mode. It is a planning estimator for simple roof geometry, not a roof-measurement substitute for complex structures.
Simple roof footprints where length, width and rise-per-12 pitch are known.
Sloped roof area, purchase area, roofing squares and approximate shingle bundles.
The tool applies one pitch factor to the full rectangular footprint.
How to use the Roofing Calculator
- Enter the horizontal roof footprint length and width.
- Enter roof rise per 12 units of horizontal run, such as 6 for a 6:12 pitch.
- Set the waste allowance for cuts, starter/ridge requirements and roof complexity as appropriate to your planning method.
- Enter the number of shingle bundles per roofing square when using US units.
- Use the resulting purchase area or squares as a planning quantity, then verify against the actual roof geometry and product instructions.

What this result helps you decide
Use roofing squares/area and bundle count for material planning after verifying valleys, dormers and roof complexity.
Worked example: 12 ft × 12 ft footprint at 6:12 pitch
- Footprint
- 12 ft × 12 ft
- Pitch
- 6:12
- Waste
- 10%
- Bundles per square
- 3
The 144 sq ft footprint uses a pitch factor of about 1.118, producing about 161 sq ft of sloped roof area. With 10% waste, purchase area is about 177 sq ft, or 1.77 roofing squares. At three bundles per square, the estimate rounds to 6 bundles.
Practical planning tips
Dormers, valleys, hips, multiple roof planes and overhang geometry can make a simple footprint estimate inaccurate.
Waste is project-specific. More complex roofs typically produce more cuts than simple gable planes.
Roof work is safety-sensitive. Use qualified local professionals and project-specific requirements where appropriate.
Common mistakes to avoid
Complex hips, valleys and dormers can require additional waste beyond a simple footprint.
Do not measure roof work from the ground if doing so would require unsafe assumptions; use plans or qualified measurements.
Roofing Calculator FAQs
What is a roofing square?+
In US roofing practice, one roofing square represents 100 sq ft of roof area. DIYGauge converts the waste-adjusted purchase area into squares.
Does the calculator measure roof overhangs?+
Only if the length and width you enter include the footprint you want counted. Measure the relevant roof footprint rather than assuming wall dimensions equal roof dimensions.
Can I use this for a complex hip roof?+
The tool is best for simple geometry. Complex roofs should be broken into measurable planes or estimated from a detailed roof measurement.
Does bundle count work for every shingle product?+
No. The bundles-per-square field is adjustable because product packaging can differ.
