Only deduct kitchen footprints where tile truly will not be installed
Kitchen floor measurement can be confusing because cabinets, islands and appliances occupy space. The key question is not what sits on the floor today but where the tile will actually be installed. Fixed cabinet footprints can be deducted when the finish stops at the toe-kick, while a freestanding range or refrigerator may still have tile underneath. This calculator starts with gross floor area, subtracts the fixed non-tiled footprints you enter, then converts the adjusted tile area into whole boxes.
Measure the full room footprint before deductions.
Remove only fixed footprints where tile will not continue.
Use exact tile dimensions/package quantity and round after waste.
How to use the Kitchen Tile Calculator
- Measure the kitchen floor as one or more simple shapes to get gross area.
- Measure fixed cabinet or island footprints only when those areas will not receive tile.
- Subtract those footprints, then apply a layout-specific waste allowance to the net tiled area.
- Convert adjusted area to tile pieces/boxes using the exact product packaging.
Why appliances are not automatic deductions
A refrigerator or freestanding range may be removed during installation and tile may continue beneath it. Deduct by installation scope, not by what currently covers the floor.
Use the net area to compare tile options
Keep the measured net tiled area, then rerun package/waste assumptions when comparing different tile sizes or patterns.
Worked example: kitchen with perimeter cabinets and island
- Gross floor
- 220 sq ft
- Fixed cabinet footprint
- 55 sq ft
- Island footprint
- 18 sq ft
- Net tiled area
- 147 sq ft
The base tile area is 147 sq ft before layout waste. Movable appliances are not deducted if the installation plan runs tile beneath them.
Practical planning tips
Sketch cabinet footprints rather than estimating them from cabinet count; corner cabinets and depth changes can matter.
Confirm whether tile will run under a future dishwasher, refrigerator or range before making a deduction.
Keep a separate backsplash calculation; kitchen floor tile and wall tile have different geometry and cut patterns.
For a remodel, consider whether cabinet layout may change before using current footprints as permanent deductions.
Common mistakes to avoid
Subtracting every appliance footprint regardless of whether tile goes underneath.
Using cabinet linear footage instead of actual floor footprint area.
Double-deducting an island that was already excluded from the room shape.
Applying the same waste assumption to a straight grid and a diagonal/patterned tile layout.
Kitchen Tile Calculator FAQs
Should I tile under kitchen cabinets?+
That is a project/install decision. The calculator lets you deduct fixed footprints when tile will not be installed there.
Should I subtract the refrigerator area?+
Only if tile will not run underneath it. Many installations continue the floor under movable appliances.
How do I include an island?+
Measure the island's fixed footprint and deduct it only when the tile stops around the island.
Can I reuse this area for different tile sizes?+
Yes. Keep the net tiled area and change tile/package/waste inputs for each product.
