PROJECT GUIDE

Measure shower tile by surface, not by the bathroom footprint

A shower has several separate tile planes, and each one can affect the order differently. This calculator builds the tiled wall area from the shower dimensions and the number of walls you select, subtracts openings that will not receive tile, and adds the shower floor when you choose to include it. The result is then adjusted for layout waste and converted to tile or box quantities. Niches, benches, curbs and feature strips are not automatically guessed; add their tiled surface deliberately when they are part of the design.

Measures

Selected shower walls plus the shower floor when included.

Does not design

Waterproofing, drain height, substrate, pan slope or structural details.

Purchase inputs

Actual tile face dimensions, pieces per box and a waste allowance suited to the layout.

STEP BY STEP

How to use the Shower Tile Calculator

  1. Measure shower length, width and the height to which tile will actually run. Do not automatically use full ceiling height if the tile stops lower.
  2. Choose how many walls are being tiled and enter the total area of doors, windows or other openings that should be deducted.
  3. Include the shower floor only when the floor uses the tile quantity you are trying to estimate. Keep a different mosaic or material as a separate calculation if that is easier to purchase accurately.
  4. Enter the real tile dimensions and box quantity, then set waste based on cuts, pattern, tile size and the number of details in the shower.

CALCULATION METHOD

How the shower surfaces are combined

Selected wall area = Sum of the tiled wall widths × Tiled height
Net wall area = Selected wall area − Openings
Total tiled area = Net wall area + Shower floor area when included
Purchase area = Total tiled area × (1 + Waste %)
Tile/box quantities are rounded up to purchasable whole units

This is a finish-material estimate. A correct tile quantity does not confirm that the shower has the correct waterproofing, slope, drain connection or substrate preparation.

USE THE RESULT

Separate quantity planning from wet-area design

Use the tile result to plan the finish material, then verify the waterproofing system, drain details, substrate and slope independently. Those items can change the build without changing the basic tile area.

RESULT EXPLAINED

For a three-wall shower, the two 3 ft side walls and one 5 ft back wall total 11 linear ft of tiled wall width. At 8 ft high, that is 88 sq ft of wall tile. The 15 sq ft shower floor brings the measured tile area to 103 sq ft. With 12% waste, plan around 115.36 sq ft before converting to tile pieces or boxes.

Practical planning tips

✓

Measure a niche as additional tiled surface if its sides, top, bottom and back will use the same tile. A niche is not simply an opening deduction.

✓

Small mosaics can reduce some cutting waste on a shower floor, while large-format tile around niches and valves can increase difficult offcuts.

✓

If walls and floor use different tile products, calculate them separately so each product gets its own box size and waste allowance.

✓

Keep spare matching tile when practical. Future shade lots or discontinued lines can make small repairs difficult to match.

!
CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

Common mistakes to avoid

Deducting a niche as an empty opening even though the niche itself will be tiled on several surfaces.

Using bathroom floor area as a shortcut for shower wall area.

Applying one box-coverage value to two different tile products used on the walls and floor.

Treating tile quantity as proof that the waterproofing and pan slope are correct.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Shower Tile Calculator FAQs

Should a shower niche be subtracted as an opening?+

Usually not if the niche interior will be tiled. The opening removes some flat wall area, but the niche creates new tiled surfaces on the back and returns. Measure those surfaces or calculate the niche separately.

Can I use one calculation for wall tile and floor mosaic?+

You can measure the combined area, but separate calculations are usually clearer when the products have different tile sizes, box quantities or waste needs.

Does the calculator work out shower-pan slope?+

No. It only estimates finish tile area. Shower-pan slope, drain geometry and waterproofing are separate design and installation requirements.

Why might I need more waste in a shower than on a simple floor?+

Showers often have valves, corners, niches, benches, curbs and multiple planes. Those details can create more cut pieces and fewer reusable offcuts.
