Grass Seed Calculator
Estimate grass seed weight from lawn area and seeding rate.

Seed rate comes from the grass product and the job you are doing
A lawn can be seeded from bare soil or overseeded into existing turf, and those two jobs may use very different rates. This calculator does not guess the correct rate. Measure the area, then enter the pounds or kilograms per area recommended for the grass species, blend and purpose. Coated seed products may be labeled by total product weight rather than pure seed weight, so follow the package rate for the product actually being spread.
Use the seed manufacturer's or project-specific rate.
Treat them as separate scenarios when the recommended rates differ.
Coated seed and blends can have different product-weight instructions.
How to use the Grass Seed Calculator
- Measure the lawn or soil area that will actually be seeded.
- Choose the seeding-rate value that matches the exact seed product and whether the job is establishment or overseeding.
- Multiply the area by that rate, keeping the rate basis and area units consistent.
- Round the result to the bag sizes sold and plan spreader passes according to the product instructions.
Why the calculator asks for rate instead of supplying one answer
Grass species, seed blends, coating and the purpose of the application all affect the recommended product rate. A user-entered rate keeps the math transparent.
Use weight to plan bag count
Once the seed weight is known, compare available bag sizes. Keep any leftover seed according to the product's storage guidance rather than automatically spreading extra.
Worked example: overseeding 5,000 sq ft
- Area
- 5,000 sq ft
- Entered overseeding rate
- 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- Calculation
- 5 × 3
- Seed
- 15 lb
The estimate is 15 lb for this entered rate. If the product specifies 6 lb per 1,000 sq ft for new-lawn establishment, the same area would require 30 lb instead.
Practical planning tips
Write down whether the chosen rate is for new seeding or overseeding; package labels often list both.
Use the product rate for coated seed rather than trying to remove coating weight mathematically.
Split highly different lawn zones if one is being repaired heavily while another only receives light overseeding.
Calibrate the spreader and consider applying half the seed in each of two perpendicular passes for more even distribution when the product guidance allows it.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using a new-lawn rate for overseeding or vice versa.
Applying a rate stated per 1,000 sq ft directly to the entire lawn without dividing by 1,000.
Assuming all grass species and blends use the same pounds per area.
Spreading an entire extra bag simply because it was purchased, which can exceed the intended rate.
Grass Seed Calculator FAQs
What seeding rate should I enter?+
Use the rate provided for the exact seed product and purpose—new establishment, repair or overseeding.
Why are new-lawn and overseeding rates different?+
Existing turf already occupies part of the area, so the amount of new seed needed can differ substantially from bare-soil establishment.
Can I use the calculator for coated seed?+
Yes. Use the product's stated application rate by packaged product weight.
How do I calculate bags?+
Divide the required seed weight by the bag weight sold and round up to a whole bag, while avoiding unnecessary over-application.
