PROJECT GUIDE

Estimate gravel volume and approximate weight

The Gravel Calculator converts the project footprint and material depth into bulk volume, applies your waste allowance, and uses the entered bulk density to estimate weight. This is useful for paths, drainage areas, landscape beds, base material and other rectangular gravel applications.

Formula-based estimate US + Metric · Editable assumptions See DIYGauge methodology →
Best for

Rectangular gravel areas with a reasonably uniform installed depth.

Main output

Cubic yards or cubic metres, approximate tons or kilograms, and material cost.

Key assumption

Weight depends on the bulk density you enter; real density varies by stone type, grading and moisture.

STEP BY STEP

How to use the Gravel Calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the gravel area.
  2. Enter the planned material depth.
  3. Set a waste allowance for grade variation and handling loss.
  4. Use a density that matches the gravel product when the supplier provides one.
  5. Enter the local price per cubic yard or cubic metre if you want a material-cost estimate.

CALCULATION METHOD

Formula used by DIYGauge

Volume = Length × Width × Depth, converted to cubic yards or cubic metres
Purchase volume = Volume × (1 + Waste %)
Approx. US tons = Purchase cubic yards × Density (lb/yd³) ÷ 2,000
Estimated cost = Purchase volume × Price per cubic unit
USE THE RESULT

What this result helps you decide

Use volume for ordering and approximate tons for delivery/load planning.

RESULT EXPLAINED

The base volume is about 1.33 cu yd. With 5% waste, the calculator returns about 1.40 cu yd. At 2,800 lb/yd³ that is approximately 1.96 tons, and at $55 per cubic yard the material estimate is about $77.

Practical planning tips

✓

Ask the supplier whether material is sold by volume or weight before converting your estimate into an order.

✓

Compacted base layers and loose decorative gravel can require different planning depths.

✓

If the area slopes or excavation depth varies, use an average depth cautiously or split the project into sections.

!
CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

Common mistakes to avoid

Crushed stone and rounded gravel have different densities.

Compaction can make loose delivered volume higher than finished volume.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Gravel Calculator FAQs

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?+

There is no single fixed conversion because gravel density varies. DIYGauge uses the bulk-density value you enter rather than assuming every gravel product weighs the same.

Should I calculate compacted depth or loose depth?+

Enter the depth you need the calculator to estimate. If a specification gives compacted thickness, supplier guidance may be needed to determine how much loose material must be delivered.

Can I use this for driveway gravel?+

Yes for a simple volume estimate, but the Driveway Gravel Calculator is the more specific tool for driveway planning.

Why is weight only approximate?+

Stone type, particle grading, moisture and compaction affect bulk density, so the weight conversion is an estimate.
