PROJECT GUIDE

Sod is perishable, so a good quantity estimate should also fit the installation plan

Sod quantity starts with lawn area, but real yards have curved beds, trees, paths and narrow strips that create trimming waste. Measure the plantable areas rather than the property lot, then use the exact coverage of the roll, slab or piece sold by your supplier. The calculator rounds to whole pieces or rolls. Because sod should usually be installed promptly after delivery, avoid adding an oversized blanket contingency that becomes material you cannot lay in time.

Measure plantable area

Exclude beds, paving and structures that will not receive sod.

Supplier size

Roll and piece dimensions vary; use actual coverage.

Timing matters

Quantity and delivery size should match how quickly the sod can be installed and watered.

STEP BY STEP

How to use the Sod Calculator

  1. Sketch the lawn and divide it into rectangles or other simple measurable zones.
  2. Subtract permanent non-sod areas such as patios, planting beds and paths.
  3. Enter the coverage of one sod roll/piece from the supplier and choose a modest allowance for curves and trimming.
  4. Round to whole pieces and coordinate the order with delivery, site preparation and installation capacity.
02
CALCULATION METHOD

Supplier coverage is the key conversion

Adjusted lawn area = Measured sod area × (1 + Cut allowance)
Pieces/rolls = Adjusted area ÷ Coverage per piece, rounded up

Sod products are not packaged to one universal roll size. The calculator uses the actual coverage per piece so the count stays tied to the product being delivered.

USE THE RESULT

Match the order to the installation day

Use the count to schedule pallets/rolls and labor. Extra sod is only useful if it can be stored and installed within the supplier's recommended handling window.

03
WORKED EXAMPLE

Worked example: 1,250 sq ft lawn

Net lawn area
1,250 sq ft
Cut allowance
4%
Adjusted area
1,300 sq ft
Piece coverage
10 sq ft
RESULT EXPLAINED

The estimate becomes 130 pieces at 10 sq ft each. If the supplier's sod pieces cover a different area, the piece count changes even though the lawn does not.

Practical planning tips

✓

Measure around curved beds with small rectangular or triangular sections instead of using the bounding rectangle.

✓

Prepare and grade the soil before final measurement when edge positions or bed shapes are still changing.

✓

Ask the supplier for exact roll/piece or pallet coverage; regional sod formats differ.

✓

Plan the laying sequence from the delivery point so sod is not stacked in the sun while the crew works far away.

CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

Common mistakes to avoid

Using property lot area as lawn area.

Assuming every sod roll covers the same number of square feet.

Adding a large waste percentage without considering how quickly extra sod can be installed.

Forgetting narrow strips along paths or fence lines when they are part of the finished lawn.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Sod Calculator FAQs

How much extra sod should I order?+

Use a modest allowance that reflects curves, small pieces and measurement uncertainty. A simple rectangular lawn may need less extra than a yard with many beds and tight edges.

How do I calculate an irregular lawn?+

Break it into manageable shapes, calculate each area and add them. Subtract permanent areas that will not receive sod.

How many square feet are in a sod roll?+

There is no universal roll size. Use the coverage stated by your local supplier.

Should I order spare sod?+

Only if it can be installed or handled properly. Sod is perishable, so a very large contingency can become waste in a different sense.
